Buddha Purnima, also known as Buddha Jayanti, is the most sacred festival of Buddhists. It falls during Vaishakha month on a full moon day, between the months of April and May. The festival celebrates three important events of Buddha’s life – his Birth, his Enlightenment, that is, the day he got full wisdom, and his Death.
Gautama Buddha was born as a prince in Lumbini, Nepal. Gautama Buddha’s time of birth and death is uncertain. He later left home to become a saint and preach Buddhism, a religion founded by him. His birth name was Siddhartha Gautama. He died in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh at the age of 80.
Buddha Purnima is celebrated elaborately in the Buddhist pilgrim centers at Sarnath, Gaya, Kushinagar and in other parts of India and the world, where large Buddhist crowds gather to offer prayers. Bodh Gaya is the most important pilgrimage site for all the Buddhists, where Gautama Buddha obtained Enlightenment and on the same day, he passed away. He first taught the Dharma at Sarnath.
Sermons and recitation of Buddha’s teachings are other important religious activities performed on this day. Monks meditate for many hours and devotees offer fruits, flowers, ‘agarbattis’ or incense sticks to statues of Lord Buddha.
It is believed that Lord Krishna was the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu and Buddha was the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
