Mahalakshmi Kuber Puja is observed on Dhantrayodashi. When Milky Sea was churned, Goddess Lakshmi came out of the deep ocean( samundra manthan ), therefore, Goddess Lakshmi along with Lord Kubera are worshiped on this auspicious day. Goddess Lakshmi is known as the Goddess of Wealth and Lord Kubera as the God of Wealth. Lord Kubera is a treasurer of all the Gods. He not only distributes wealth and treasure but also guards and maintains the treasure in whole universe, therefore, he is famous as Guardian of Wealth. Following two days after Dhantrayodashi, Lakshmi Puja is done on Amavasya.

Lakshmi Puja on Dhantrayodashi is done during Sthir Lagna, which means fixed (not moveable) so that Lakshmi ji will stay in our home. Sthir Lagna is Vrishabha Lagna which mostly overlaps with Pradosh Kaal during Diwali. Pradosh Kaal is considered to be the most significant and effective time for Lakshmi Puja on Dhantrayodashi, when Sthir Lagna prevails. People buy gold, silver or utensils on this day as a sign of 'good luck' as it is believed that Goddess Laxmi inherits in metal ( Dhaatu ).

Dhantrayodashi Day is also celebrated as Dhanvantri Jayanti or Dhanvantari Triodasi. Dhanvantari was Vaidya of all Gods and he was the founder of Ayurveda. So, on this auspicious day along with increase in wealth, people get good health. Yamandeep ritual is also done on this day. Lord Yama (Yamaraj) who is the God of Death is pleased by lighting a Deepak outside home in evening so that he protects all the family members from any accidental or untimely death. This ritual is called as Deepdan for Yamaraj. As per Hindu religious texts, it was an age old story of a 16 year old son of King Hima, who was saved by lighting a lamp outside his doorstep, which dazzled and blinded the eyes of Yamaraj.
